This submission addresses current data trends in education for Aboriginal students, racism and improving cultural safety, the impact of trauma in engaging with education, strengthening school engagement through prevention and early intervention, and meeting the learning needs of Aboriginal students.

VACCA provided a submission to the Inquiry into the state education system in Victoria. It is VACCA’s contention that the state education system in Victoria requires reform surrounding cultural safety and representation, trauma informed practice and resourcing to improve student engagement and outcomes. This submission will respond to the relevant terms of reference and make recommendations for reform in Victoria’s state schooling system.

VACCA provided a submission to the Federal Government’s proposed Early Years Strategy which aims to create a new integrated, holistic whole-of-government approach to ensure children have the best start to life in their critical early years of development. VACCA's submission calls for a broader approach which ensures the right to self-determination and cultural safety for Aboriginal children and families from prenatal to eight years of age.

The Commission for Children and Young People established an inquiry into the educational experiences of children and young people living in out-of-home care. VACCA has provided a submission that response to their terms of reference which seek to develop an understanding of how children and young people in care experience education, including Aboriginal children and young people and children and young people with disability ; identify the barriers to education for children and young people in care; examine the impact of COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns on the educational experiences and engagement of children and young people in out-of-home care, including their access to support; identify the extent to which policies and practices relating to out-of-home care support children and young people to stay in school, including those provided by the Department of Education and Training, Child Protection, and family services ; and recommend changes to policy, practice, legislation, or the delivery of services that will improve young people’s experiences of education in out-of-home care  and protect and promote young people’s right to education.
