The Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) will host a series of Rainbow Yarning workshops throughout October, aimed at strengthening connections within the LGBTIQA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
Each workshop will feature guest speakers presenting on a range of topics and LGBTIQA+ supports and services. The sessions will also give attendees the opportunity to participate in cultural activities and yarning circles in a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
Developed by VACCA’s LGBTIQA+ working group Binbeal Murrup, meaning Rainbow Spirit in the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung language, the initiative encourages members of the LGBTIQA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to get together, make connections and strengthen their sense of self.
“It’s so important for us to be able to get together and have a yarn about issues that affect our community directly” says Dan Powell, VACCA Snr Quality Advisor, LGBTIQA+ Team lead.
“We’d love to see LGBTIQA+ mob attend these sessions and come away with a new network, new supports, and feeling stronger in their identity”.
The workshops are open to all LGBTIQA+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community aged 18 and over. The first workshop will take place on Saturday 1 October from 12pm at Collingwood Children’s Farm and will be followed by two further sessions on Saturday 15 and Saturday 29 October.
Places are limited and attendees are encouraged to make a booking to secure their spot;
